The mission of the Economic Empowerment Program is to provide support and promote employment, economic self-sufficiency, and independence. The vision of this program is that African immigrants in Montgomery County will be equipped with the resources needed to compete effectively for employment, and with the skills needed to manage their personal finances independently and responsibly.

In response to feedback from our constituent community regarding the economic downturn and its effect on their lives, we made the strategic decision to focus resources and energy on its Economic Empowerment and Workforce Development programs. Impediments to successful employment that can be endemic to the low-income community are especially challenging to immigrants, who may face language and cultural barriers in addition to low levels of experience, information, and resources. Our Economic Empowerment program operates using the models of other successful programs in the area, but utilizes its unique perspective as an African-run organization to effectively serve the African immigrant community.

We recently conducted our first Job Readiness Fair, with the objective of providing unemployed members of the community with the skills and information needed to get them back to work. The main feature of the fair was a series of workshops that aimed to prepare African immigrants and other low-income community members for employment. The fair featured several resource and information tables hosted by the IMPACT Silver Spring Workforce Circle Program, technology-training program Digital Bridge, and Montgomery Works, a jobs resource center in the county.  Primerica, an area employer, was also present.

Given our recent decision to emphasize Economic Empowerment programs, the organization has begun to formulate plans for an Economic Empowerment Course. The course is based on the models used by IMPACT Silver Spring’s Workforce Circle and the consulting group People-4-People, but, when implemented, will be an independently run MCDC program targeting the specific needs of the African immigrant community.
